The Detroit artist Tiff Massey works primarily in steel, drawing heavily on hip-hop culture, the Detroit area and the African diaspora in order to create installations, sculptures and jewelry ranging in measurement from the wearable to the architectural. With 7 Mile + Livernois, the Detroit Institute of Art guarantees the rising artist’s “most bold museum set up to date”, with new work specifically commissioned for this exhibit. Works on Paper Graphic arts comprise a large part of the museum’s assortment, which reveals the central significance of works on paper for American artists, each as studies for creations in other media and as finished artistic endeavors. The pandemic interval was a time when I could dedicate myself 100 percent to painting and creating. At that time, a sequence of paintings called “Butterfly Woman” was created.
